Our Tower Hamlets Outreach team scoops big awards for its SEN youth club

18th July 2017

Well done guys! We're really proud of you...

Newark Youth London is a long-established charity in Tower Hamlets that supports young people in the borough to 'develop the skills and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as responsible citizens'.

At the end of last year, our Outreach team in Tower Hamlets partnered with Newark Youth to set up a brand new social club for young people with learning disabilities and special educational needs (SEN). This was a first of its kind in the borough and something that was desperately needed, to support a potentially isolated group of young people to find its own social network and broaden its horizons.

Following months of planning, the team launched its Club Sessions in December 2016. The sessions, which happen every Wednesday, are a chance for young people aged 18-25 with a learning disability and SEN to get together, socialise, try their hands at new activities and share life skills. For example, staff have facilitated a lively workshop on how to be safe in the community, Club members have taken trips to the cinema and there are regular badminton and pool sessions.

From only a few members at the beginning, the youth club now welcomes dozens of members.

The hard work of the Outreach team was rewarded at the 33rd annual Newark Youth Awards in May.

Applauded by local dignitaries including Rushanara Ali MP and Tower Hamlets Mayor John Biggs, Outward support worker Abul Bashar received a special award for his tireless work to set up and run the Club Sessions. Outward customer Shahin also took home an award for all his efforts volunteering at the Club Sessions, where he helps coordinate things. Well done team!
